days
DESCRIPTION:

Laos and Cambodia—old French Indochina—are culturally linked, yet remarkably distinct, and the amalgam offers the traveler unsurpassed richness and diversity. Stay at unique accommodations throughout so that we may explore these countries in comfort and style.

This itinerary that combines some of the most important and well-known destinations in each country along with recently discovered, more remote gems, providing unusual insight into these amazing countries.

Begin in northern Thailand and gradually ease into the trip by staying at a luxury resort overlooking the wending Mekong River. Explore the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma) meet. In the Burmese border town of Mae Sai, visit the Temple of the Enrobed Elephant and the Mahamyatmuni Temple, and learn about the opium trade in the Golden Triangle.

Travel overland into the heart of Laos to experience some of the most traditional and colorful hill tribe villages in the region. During a private Mekong River cruise, learn about the area’s unique biodiversity, and the conservation efforts underway to preserve it. The time in central Laos culminates with a visit an area surrounded by some of the largest and most traditional tribal villages in all of Laos, and a visit to Luang Prabang, the former royal capital of Laos and designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

From Luang Prabang, fly to Siem Reap, the location of incomparable Angkor Wat. Here, meet with an archeologist in charge of rebuilding and restoring sections of the complex. Travel through the Cambodian countryside visiting local villages such as Mechrey Floating Village on Tonle Sap Lake, and the highly traditional village of Ampil Peam. The journey includes a stay in a charming and colorful town, surrounded by villages and ruins, and a visit to one of the largest and still greatly unexplored forest regions in southeast Asia.

An optional morning elephant ride, a traditional private baci welcome ceremony in Laos, a cruise on the Nam Ou River, and meetings with conservation, vocational, and aid organizations are all possible. The unique combination of adventure and luxury makes this a truly unusual and memorable trip.
