Featuring Mexico’s Festival of San Sebastian

Ideal Length of Trip:
8+
days
DESCRIPTION:
Travel to one of Mexico’s least explored and most fascinating regions – Chiapas. This is Mexico’s southernmost state, abounding with the legacy of Spanish rule and the remnants of the ancient Maya civilization. Chiapas has the second-largest indigenous population in the country, and the modern Maya here form a direct link to the past. They fiercely maintain their traditions, from style of dress to religious practice to their original Mayan languages, making our journey through Chiapas a window into ancient Maya culture. In addition to its vibrant indigenous culture, Chiapas has beautiful colonial cities, fascinating archaeological sites, and incredible natural beauty. Yet Chiapas sees a fraction of the travelers that well-known Mexican destinations see, making it the ideal destination. Bask in colonial San Cristóbal’s pastel colors, rustic charm, and evocative markets and meet local contacts along the way who grant us privileged insiders’ access into the living cultural heart of their vibrant region. One of Chiapas’ best-kept secrets is the festivals that occur here. This visit has been planned to coincide with the Festival of San Sebastian, one of the most colorful and lively folkloric celebrations in all of Mexico. This week-long festival celebrates the momentous encounter between the Pre-Columbian and Spanish worlds and is filled with historic parades, special foods, and fireworks.
