El Salvador Sojourn

Land of Volcanoes, Mountains & Lakes
DESCRIPTION:

Forget what people think about El Salvador. The civil war has been over for about 20 years! Today, El Salvador is a peaceful land of broad valleys, plentiful and dramatic volcanoes, black-sand beaches, and outstandingly welcoming, resilient, and optimistic people. Discover ancient archaeological sites from the Maya civilization, some dating back to the third century BC, as well as colonial towns, interesting markets, crafts, museums, delicious food, and only a small number of other travelers, making this an authentic gem of a destination.

Explore historical San Salvador, then visit Volcanoes National Park. Walk in the crater, discover one of the most beautiful lakes in Central America, witness lava fields, and tour the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén, a Mayan village buried by volcanic ash 1,400 years ago. Depart for the colonial village of Suchitoto, where time has stood still and you can explore the cobble stone streets with adobe homes and church. Cruise to Bird Island to view flamingoes and storks. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views in the mountain town of La Palma, home to many artisan workshops, and walk to the crystalline ponds looking for wildlife. Drive through the “Artisan Paradise Route” high in the Sierra Madre, and cross into Honduras, where we stay in the tranquil colonial town of Santa Rosa de Copán. Here, tour the classical Maya site of Copán, also called the “Paris of the Maya World” for its beauty. Learn about one of the most important Maya sites, and visit some of its excellent museums. Return to El Salvador along the “Route of the Flowers,” via quaint Spanish colonial towns and coffee plantations. The final stop is in Salinitas, for a day devoted to enjoying the lovely beach and the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean.

CONSIDER:

While gang violence keeps so many adventurous travelers at bay, the vast majority of this beautiful country remains untouched by 'the troubles.' Traveling with a guide is a perfect solution.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
El Salvador's peak seasons are Holy Week, which precedes Easter Sunday; in August; and around Christmas. Prices during these times might be higher. December is an ideal time to visit El Salvador, when the rainy season has ended and the landscape is green. Wildlife-watching is best in the dry season (many parks are closed during the rainy season). Turtle-watching is the exception: Nesting takes place from May to November.
