  Finding Happiness in Bhutan

DESCRIPTION:

Few places on Earth can match the breathtaking splendor and unique botanical and ornithological diversity of Bhutan. A land of soaring mountains with views of snow-capped peaks, villages boasting architecturally stunning temples and painted homes, and busy and colorful markets. Bhutan is also a place of abundant natural and cultural beauty with a timeless and spiritual quality not easily found elsewhere in the world.

Bhutan is steeped in ancient customs, yet measures its success by remarkably progressive standards—the “Gross National Happiness” of its citizens. This unusual outlook is influenced by Buddhist spiritual values, a desire to conserve the natural environment, and a unique culture. Discover a land with a timeless and spiritual quality not easily found elsewhere in the world.

Explore snow-capped, Himalayan peaks, villages boasting architecturally stunning temples and painted homes, and colorful markets. Travel to glacial valleys and experience the sacred heart of Bhutan in the Bumthang Valley.

Learn about traditional medicine, talk with monks, and meet students on the forefront of Bhutan’s transition to modernity. Few destinations have generated the stir of anticipation among travelers worldwide that Bhutan created when it tentatively cracked its door ajar in the 1970s. Experience the joy and ease of a society whose legacy is in passing the art of smiling from generation to generation.

Discover a kaleidoscope of images and experiences as an introduction to the nature, culture, and spirituality of this Himalayan kingdom. Visit museums, government buildings, monasteries, and temples. Drive through the Dochula Pass, at 10,000 feet above sea level where, weather permitting, the view is quintessential Himalayan. Witness the beautiful Phobjikha Valley, one of the few glacial valleys in Bhutan and the winter home of the Black-necked Cranes. Visit one of the sacred hearts of Bhutan, the Bumthang Valley, a microcosm of Bhutan, this region is famous for woodcarving, mask making, and weaving. Visit a local hospital where traditional Bhutanese medicine is practiced, experience a traditional archery competition, and talk with Bhutanese students who are on the forefront of Bhutan’s transition from tradition to modernity. Determine for yourself whether the Gross National Happiness is palpable.

CONSIDER:
Elevation will range from 4,500’ to over 10,000’ during some of the drives. The highest overnight elevation will be 9,000’. Time your trip with a festival to see how Tantric Mahayana Buddhism permeates Bhutanese culture, where locals travel on foot from miles around to enjoy day-long dance performances amidst swirling incense, streaming costumes, and sacred rituals.

OPTIONAL EXTENSIONS & ADD-ONS:

Optional hikes ranging from 30 minutes up to 5-6 hours (for Tiger’s Nest Monastery) can be undertaken. Colkata (Calcutta), India and Bangko, Thailand are both gateways to Bhutan and can be visited en route.
