Ancient Persia, Modern Iran

With a Uniquely Jewish Perspective

Tehran - Hamedan - Yazd - Kerman - Shiraz - Isfahan
DESCRIPTION:

Explore Iran, from its ancient, dazzling history to its complex modern culture. Discover colorful bazaars, admire its splendid architecture, walk among its formidable archaeological sites, and converse with Iranian people – including its Jewish communities. Iran has the largest Jewish population in the Middle East outside Israel. It is said that Jews have been in Iran for more than 2,600 years, arriving even before the destruction of the First Temple in 587 BCE and the resultant exile of the Jews from Judea to Babylon (modern day Iraq).

This journey will explore Iran’s palaces and mosques, synagogues and Jewish tombs, 1,000 year-old fortresses and contemporary artisan shops. Sip tea in a teahouse and stroll through a true Persian garden, with its aromatic air of almond and pomegranate trees. Attend synagogue, visit Jewish communities, and meet with members of Iran’s Jewish communities. Most of all, experience and see for yourself how the Iranian leadership and its people may not seem as united as you think… and support the Iranian Jewish community.

Once the seat of the mighty Persian Empire, today Iran is a place of searing beauty and contrasts, with its snow-covered mountains and stark desert, mosaic-clad mosques and young women testing the boundaries of permissible hejab (Islamic dress). Its monumental archaeological sites are some of the finest in the world, its architecture is infused with color and energy, and its bazaars are without equal. Iranian culture prizes hospitality; Iranians are unfailingly warm and engaging, delighting in welcoming American travelers into their modern lives and quietly sharing their desire for democracy. You will be truly surprised by your welcome!

CONSIDER:

Travel to Iran means absolutely following a number of rules. Women must cover their heads, arms and legs; men must also dress modestly. Deviating from the itinerary is possible when approved by the local guide. Certain sensitive topics, particularly talking about the government in any negative manner, must be avoided. Outside of Tehran, hotels are comfortable and clean, but not luxuroius. Food is delicious; no alcohol is available.
