A Journey Through Thailand, Laos, & Cambodia
On the Khmer Trail

Ideal Length of Trip:
14+
days
DESCRIPTION:
This original, off-the-beaten track journey presents three countries linked by their common Khmer heritage. Learn about Khmer architecture, from seldom-visited gems to the pinnacle of examples: Cambodia’s sprawling, thousand-year old Angkor Wat – one of mankind’s most magnificent artistic accomplishments. Learn about the battle to preserve the ruins from encroaching jungle, the role of elephants in Khmer society, and watch the sunset from the top of Phanom Bakheng – reached by elephant! This is an exciting opportunity to experience the essence of Indochina: its ancient cultural legacy, the lingering and faded vestiges of the French colonial empire, and the natural beauty of the lakes, rivers, cliffs and jungles of this remarkable region.
After a day at leisure in Bangkok, head north to the 13th and 14th century-city of Sukhotai, site of one of Southeast Asia's greatest kingdoms and a UNESCO World Heritage site. See the red stone cliff of Pha Taem, with color murals of animals, human hands and geometric designs that date back 3,000 years. Experience spectacular ruins perched on a cliff edge some fifteen hundred feet above the Cambodian jungle — technically located mostly in Cambodia, but accessible only from Thailand. Northeastern Thailand is known for its Khmer monuments, fine arts and crafts, and friendly, traditional people.
In Laos, discover the charming town of Luang Prabang, the base for exploration over the next several days, with its gentle pace and harmonious mixture of Lao Buddhist and French provincial architecture. Watch the timeless scene of lines of golden robed monks walking silently through the streets at dawn collecting rice from the townspeople. Visit a marvelous Khmer temple with a holy spring on the banks of the Mekong River and cruise along the Mekong River. After a stop in the capital city of Vientiane, enjoy an island surrounded by the Mekong River and covered by thousands of flame trees and palms.
In Cambodia, we'll tour Phnom Penh, with its bustling markets, Khmer temple sites and unique character. Then we spend three luxurious nights to witness the glory of Angkor Wat. Meandering this hugely impressive 10th century complex of palaces, temples and monuments, some overgrown with the twisted vines and trunks of the encroaching jungle, will simply amaze you.
CONSIDER:
The itinerary can be timed to coincide with the most important festival in Thailand, Loy Krathong, a mesmerizing celebration that culminates with thousands of candles floating atop miniature banana-leaf boats along the country’s waterways.
