Nicaragua Sojourn

Land of Volcanoes, Mountains & Lakes
DESCRIPTION:

With several decades of stability, Nicaragua is now the place to go. Behind the country’s tumultuous history, uncover a peaceful and beautiful country. Known as the “land of lakes and volcanoes,” all who visit Nicaragua are struck not only by the grandeur of its nature and colonial cities and lack of tourists, but by the genuine hospitality and earnestness of the Nicaraguan people.

Visit the Montibelli Private Nature Reserve. Climb Cerro Negro Volcano and if you dare, slide down its ashy lava slopes on a Sandboard. Wander the colonial city of León, which boasts the largest cathedral in Central America. Take in Nicaragua’s many stunning vistas with a trip to the Catarina lookout and witness the country’s rich biodiversity on a nature walk through the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve. Find the best of Central America’s handicrafts on a visit to the pottery-making village of San Juan del Oriente. Enjoy the colonial town of Granada strolling through its Parque Central with the locals. Kayak or take a motorized boat through Lake Nicaragua’s isletas, idyllic small islands rich in flora and fauna. Finish the journey with two relaxing days in San Juan del Sur, staying at one of Nicaragua’s most stunning Pacific coast resorts.

CONSIDER:

If you like adventure, you can surf down an active volcano, dive into underwater caves, canoe through alligator-infested wetlands, and more.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL:
December is the best time to visit Nicaragua, just after the rainy season, when it is lush, green, and not too hot. As the dry season progresses towards May, it can get uncomfortably hot and barren. This is the best time for bird-watching in the rainforests and snorkeling in the Caribbean, where the waters are calmer. The rainy season, from May to October, has showers usually in the afternoon and at night; unless hiking, it is OK to visit. Christmas, New Year's, and Easter are the big holidays in Nicaragua and prices tend to rise.
