Papua New Guinea:
Island in the Clouds

DESCRIPTION:
Synonymous with adventure and home to the world’s most exotic tribes, Papua New Guinea is a land as colorful and astonishing as its fabled bird of paradise. Experience intriguing populations of people with complex tribal liaisons, wild cultural celebrations, and ancient agricultural practices. And the backdrop: rugged mountains, thundering waterfalls, dazzling reef systems, and an abundance of exotic flora and fauna.
Begin in the lovely seaside setting of Madang, and stay at a former copra plantation overlooking the Bismarck Sea with its active volcano on the horizon. In Timbunke, board the intimate Sepik Spirit for a three-night cruise into the seldom-visited area of the Sepik River, a region prolific with the traditional wood carvings of the Iatmul people. On the Karawari River, explore the jungle, river, and villages, where locals glide past locals poling their dug-out canoes, as drums throb, wild birds call, and traditional village lifestyle remains unchanged. Fly to the highlands, over some of the world’s most impenetrable jungles, to the Tari Valley, where Huli Wigmen live in villages little changed since the Stone Age. The once-fierce warriors have made body decoration a high art, painting their faces with brilliant colors and adorning their heads with birds of paradise feathers.
This trip is a photographer’s paradise and a must for the adventurer looking for the remote and unexpected.
