The Hidden Heart of Peru:

People, Traditions & Sustainability Including Machu Picchu

DESCRIPTION:

Superlatives are often used when describing Peru. It boasts the world’s highest navigable lake, its mightiest river, and its two deepest canyons, as well as the oldest urban settlement in the Americas and the second highest diversity of bird species on the planet. Peru’s historical legacy is equally impressive and archaeological records of its many fascinating pre-Hispanic cultures can be found throughout the country. Of these, none evoke travelers’ passions more than the magical Machu Picchu, the iconic and mysterious Inca masterpiece.

Peru’s marvelous natural bounty and historical heritage is rivaled by the depth of its thriving culture, from an ancient textile tradition to vibrant folkloric and religious festivals. Meet farmers, chefs, indigenous master weavers, school headmasters, curators, and other local friends who will invite us into their lives and homes. There will also be several opportunities for us to join the local communities in making a positive impact.

Venture to Chinchero to learn how the 2,000-year old Peruvian textile arts play a key role in Andean life, rituals and festivals. Enjoy a splendid walk passing alpaca, sheepherders, Andean meadows and creeks, ancient burial sites, and a dramatic rock canyon and share a picnic lunch en route. Join the director of the country’s most successful weavers’ cooperative, in her efforts to rescue this endangered tradition. Delve into the fine art of ceviche, Peru’s most notable dish, with a private demonstration from one of Lima’s top ceviche chefs. Discover magical Machu Picchu, as an Andean specialist guide explains its history and unveils the nature of its most important structures.

No trip to Peru would be complete without spending time meandering through the beautiful cobbled streets of Cusco, and exploring the splendid Sacred Valley, the heartland of the ancient Inca Empire. Enjoy an in-depth pilgrimage to the breathtaking and magical Inca sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
