Cradle of Chinese Civilization
The Yellow River:

DESCRIPTION:
Mention the Yellow River to people in China and the name immediately conjures up phrases such as “the cradle of Chinese Civilization” or “Mother River.” This is because the river’s basin was the birthplace of northern Chinese civilization and the most prosperous region in early Chinese history.
From its mystical source in the 14,000-foot Tibetan highlands, the river sweeps across the northern plains where China's original inhabitants first learned to till and irrigate, to make porcelain and gunpowder, to build and bury imperial dynasties. The river, curving through regions intermittently touched by China’s economic boom, mirrors the country’s path to modernity, and captures the soul of the nation.
Journey along sections of the Yellow River’s 3,400-mile stretch, a diverse landscape that ranges from the desert lands of Gansu Province to the bustling economic stronghold of Shandong Province where the Yellow River enters the Bohai Sea. This is also a journey through time, from the world’s earliest wheel to the thriving city of Shanghai, and an opportunity to see a different China.
Visit a rare and large stone forest located at the intersection of the Yellow River and the Great Wall. Bicycle ride along the Ancient City Wall of Xi’an (where we also see the city’s famous Terracotta Warriors). Explore grottoes filled with over 100,000 carved Buddhas. See the birthplace of ancient martial arts and view a performance by its current students. Witness Tibetan grasslands, vast deserts, and interesting ethnic groups, as well as visits to imperial-era capitals. Even float along the Yellow River in a traditional sheepskin raft, if you like.
